Under the law, signed by President Zeman on June 10, a 23 percent tax will be imposed on the gross gaming revenue of operators of online sports betting and lotteries, with casinos paying a higher 35 percent tax. These taxes will be paid in addition to the Czech Republic’s 19 percent corporate income tax.
The final version of the new law was approved by the lower house of Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, in April 2016, and endorsed by the Senate earlier this month. A previous version of the gambling liberalization bill envisaged a tax rate as high as 40 percent on newly regulated operators.
The new law is expected to come into force on January 1, 2017, and generate CZK2bn (USD83.4m) in annual revenue.
