Japan’s IR bill could face some headwind as opinions within the Komeito party remain divided and some politicians might vote against it.

Japan.- Integrated resorts may be getting close to becoming a reality in Japan as the submission of the IR Implementation Bill draws near. However, division within the Komeito party might be bad news for the industry’s chances in the Land of the Rising Sun as some politicians may even vote against the bill.

During a televised debate between the policy chiefs of the seven largest parties, Komeito’s own Noritoshi Ishida, urged to focus on gambling anti-addiction measures and suggested that he would prefer a slower approach on enacting the IR Implementation Bill.

There are some concerns that NKP politicians may vote against the project just like it happened in 2016, but this time would be even worse as legislation has been pushed by the government itself.

Even as Komeito members have raised some eyebrows regarding the future of the bill, Japan is confident that the Liberal Democratic Party, in addition to conservative opposition parties, will manage to gather the necessary votes to pass the bill, regardless of how the NKP votes.
