The BBC’s Daily Politics has discussed how betting shops are the safest places to gamble in the UK.

Chief Executive Malcolm George reported on the issue for the programme’s “SoapBox” feature, before debating with MP Kwasi Kwarteng and Baroness Prosser.

In the film, Malcolm noted that anyone can buy an unlimited number of scratchcards in newsagent or walk into a casino and gamble straight away.

He said that in a bookies: “Staff can monitor what everyone is staking, winning or losing, and if someone is starting to bet more than usual. Of course people can develop problems.  But staff here are trained in how to intervene,  there’s a plethora of information about how to get help AND a self-exclusion system so a punter can bar themselves .”

Watch the debate for yourself here – the feature starts at 32.51
